Sage-Grouse Deal re Keystone Pipeline
Since the push towards to Keystone oil pipeline is strong, a strategy similar to that in Wyoming should be developed. Leave the Canadian part to the Canadians, and concentrate on whether there is any pathway that could have local acceptance and the least environmental harm. We have to bridge this left-right divide if we are to have meaningful conservation. To ignore energy companies in Wyoming would be like ignoring lumber companies in Northern Maine - it does not work.
This path has become clearer to me after the recent battle for endangered species funding, in which I was involved for national Audubon. We cannot just be knee jerk; we must look at those areas where can make common cause with the energy industries, gun lovers, and others, who may have the same interests in a particular area.
